Santa Isabel
Single US$ 122; Double US$ 165
Calle Baratillo 9 entre Obispo y Narciso López, Plaza de Armas, Habana Vieja.
Tel. +53 (7) 860-8201
Originally built by the Countess of San Juan de Jaruco who subsequently sold it to the Count of Santovenia, this grand eighteenth-century palace overlooks Havana's oldest and most beautiful colonial square, the Plaza de Armas. The pretty central courtyard has a fountain which is often filled with fresh tuberoses. Some of the beds are pretty squeaky so it's perhaps not the best place for nuits passionelles, but the cocktails are among the city's best and we defy you to get up from the mahogany and leather armchairs in the courtyard after more than 2 mojitos. In the Santovenia Suite for a serious aesthetic treat.
Conde de Villanueva
Single US$ 77; Double US$ 113
Calle de los Mercaderes #202 esq. Lamparilla, La Habana Vieja.
Tel. +53 (7) 862-9293/94
Delightfully small and intimate establishment in what was once the mansion of Claudio Martínez de Pinillos, Count of Villanueva, the leader of Cuban Creole society in the nineteenth century. A great favourite with cigar aficionados and useful for private weekend parties. One of Old Havana's best cigar shops, with private humidors to rent, is tucked away in the old slave quarters on its mezzanine floor. The suite overlooking the junction of Lamparilla and Mercaderes Streets is probably the most inviting hotel room in Havana.
Florida
Single US$ 77; Double US$ 113
Calle Obispo #252, esquina Cuba
Tel. +53 (7) 862 4127
A fabulous place with only 25 well furnished and spacious rooms flush with Italian marble. It was restored to its original 19th-century charm in 1999 and has a lot of style. The entrance onto the bustling Calle Obispo is through a hugely impressive and imposing restored wooden door. The club downstairs can get quite lively but you should not be disturbed.
Raquel
Single US$ 110; Double US$ 113
Calle San Ignacio #103, esquina Amargura
Tel. +53 (7) 860 8280
The Raquel opened in June 2003 following extensive renovation work. It is another lovely Habaguanex smallish hotel with only 25 rooms, located very near to Plaza Vieja. While the art nouveau lobby is impressive, the huge stained-glass roof will take your breath away. The hotel has a biblical theme and hosts the only Jewish restaurants in Havana. There is also a small gym within the hotel
San Miguel
Single US$ 77; Double US$ 113
Calle Cuba #53, e/ Peña Pobre
Tel. +53 (7) 862 7656 / 863 4029
With only 10 bedrooms the San Miguel is a cosy place which has been tastefully renovated. Some of the rooms come with a view over the Bay of Havana.

Ambos Mundos
Single US$ 77; Double US$ 113
Calle Obispo #153, esquina Mercaderes
Tel. +53 (7) 860 9530
This is Hemingway’s old hotel. His old room (511) is maintained as if he had never left. While the roof terrace offers good views and the piano lounge has a pleasant beat, as a place to stay do not set your expectations too high. Average rooms, slow service and hoards of tourists make this more a place to visit.
Armadores de Santander
Single US$ 77; Double US$ 113
Calle San Pedro #4, esquina Luz
Tel. +53 (7) 862 8000
A couple of minutes stroll along the port road this three storey building used to be the headquarters for Havana’s main shipbuilders. While the overall building is quite impressive the ambience can be a little cold and impersonal especially compared to some of Old Havana’s smaller Habaguanex places. The rooms follow a nautical theme and are very large and clean.
Palacio O’Farrill
Single US$ 77; Double US$113
Calle Cuba #102, esquina Chacón
Tel. +53 (7) 860 5080
This three storey neo-classical palace used to belong to Don Ricardo O’Farrill, one of the richest families in Havana during colonial times. The Palacio reopened in 2002 with each floor reflecting a different period: the first floor is 18th-century in style; the second incorporates 19th-century elements; and the third-floor rooms have a modern, 20th-century look.
El Comendador
Single US$ 66; Double US$ 100
Calle Obrapía, esquina Baratillo
Tel. +53 (7) 867 1037
With only 14 rooms this 18th-century Hispanic-Moorish style residence is like a calmer annex to its neighbor, Hostal Valencia (where you check in). Colonial style with antique furniture it makes a good option.
Los Frailes
Single US$ 110-130; Double US$ 77-87
Calle Brasil (Teniente Rey) # 8, entre Mercaderes y Oficios
Tel. +53 (7) 862 9383 / 9510
The Frailes reopened in 2001 within a few steps of the old St Francis Monastery in what used to be the residence of Marquis Don Pedro Claudio Duquesne in the 19th century. The friar theme is maintained with both the décor and the uniforms of staff. Kind of quirky, this is a popular place. Some of the rooms can be a little musty and most do not have windows (which at least makes it mercifully quiet).
Beltrán de Santa Cruz
Single US$ 86 Double US$ 100
Calle San Ignacio #411, entre Muralla y Sol, near the Plaza Vieja
Tel. +53 (7) 860 8330
The Hotel Beltrán is something of an oasis next to its run down neighboring buildings. This 18th-century building was reopned in 2002 and is right next to the very charming Plaza Vieja. This is a very small hotel and only has double rooms.
Valencia
Single US$ 60; Double US$ 95
Calle Oficios #53, esquina Obrapía
Tel. +53 (7) 867 1037
Fantastic value, this small beautiful place has only 12 rooms and often gets booked up early. Simple, yet very charming rooms set around a central courtyard garden with lush tropical plants make this a great option if you can get a reservation.
Mesón de la Flota
Single US$ 56; Double US$ 84
Calle Mercaderes #257, entre Amargura y Brasil (Teniente Rey)
Tel. +53 (7) 863 3838
This is small hotel which is more with just five rooms which are located above the restaurant of the same home which hosts live flamenco every night. Very much a tavern atmosphere with good rooms.
