Adjoining the more upscale Meliá Cayo Coco, at the far east end of the island, this three-star all-inclusive (with a four-star billing) is the only hotel in the area with access to two different beaches: Playa Las Coloradas and Playa Larga. Stylishly contemporary, it has relatively few of the monstrous architectural faux pas typical of Cuban designs. This hotel is a great option for families—at least by day.

This Spanish run all-inclusive occupies the very eastern tip of the island, with the fabulous beach on one side and a natural saltwater lagoon on the other. The curving lobby, with its plentiful marble and travertine and stylish contemporary furnishings, is the most sophisticated on Cayo Coco.Guests who get bored can also use the facilities at the neighboring Sol Cayo Coco (but not vice versa). If you´re seeking relative peace and quiet, an advantage here is that no kids are allowed.

This hotel backs the platinum sands of Playa Flamingo. It originated as part of the former Tryp Colonial Village and was spun off in 2003, when it was partially renovated, reopening under management by Spain´s Blau hotel group. Architecture here plays on a colonial theme, with red-tile roofs, wrought-iron lanterns and grills, shady arched terraces, Moorish tilework, and walls painted in calming tropical ice-cream pastels.

This colorful all-inclusive hotel has been through various transformations in the past decade and has settled into a first-rate hotel under Spanish management. The two spectacular pools (refurbished in 2008) snaking through the grounds almost steal the show away from the gorgeous beach. The landscaping beats the pants off some of the nearby rivals thanks to a surfeit of palms.

Until recently called Villa Gaviota, but still in the Gaviota brand, this charmless hotel stands out from the rest of the pack on Cayo Coco for its small size. It´s managed by Oasis, a major Spanish tour company that feeds the hotel with package groups, although the hotel is open to everyone. The setting on Playa Flamingo makes the heart skip a beat, so lovely are the white sands and turquoise waters.

This mid-range all-inclusive hotel is at Playa Jaula, about three kilometers west of the main beach. It´s run by Cuba´s Gaviota group in conjunction with Spain´s Oasis hotel group. The grounds are a bit spartan, but the gorgeous beach and spectacular water make amends. The lobby, with its its peaked hardwood ceiling and lovely use of stained glass, is an inviting space to lounge in rattan chairs.
