Café Amor ‘Karabalí’
Calle 23, entre O y N
Admission: 5 CUC
Open café noon-4. 30pm

During the day this is a regular café. At night there is a floor show and live music. Unspectacular.
Centro Vasco
Calle 3ra, esquina 4
This is located very close to the Meliá Cohíba hotel and is one of the best locations is you want a low key inexpensive venue with a good atmosphere. While this was the site of one of Havana's former Spanish social club's, the décor is unexceptional inside and the air conditioning can be quite artic. It is, however, fun and lively most of the time. Entertainment is varied. A good call.
Admission: 5 CUC
1 CUP matinée
Open bar 10am-2. 30am

1 CUP pool

This attracts mostly a Cuban crowd which appreciate its reasonable prices and good location on La Rampa. The house band is typically excellent and plays a mixture of styles including son, salsa and rock covers.
El Pico Blanco
Hotel St John, Calle O, entre 23 y 25
Admission: 5 CUC
Open 10pm-3am
Tel. +53 (7) 833 3740
A short way down from the Hotel Nacional and next to the excellent pizza plaza, Maracas, this place is exceptionally popular with Cubans at the weekend when you will see queues winding around the block. The disco is on one of the top floors and is unexceptional except for the general enthusiasm and energy. While the program changes, at present there is live music on Wednesdays; bolero and filin on Thursday, Cuban night on Fridays with an entirely musical show; and romantic night on Saturdays.
Jardines del 1830
Malecón, esquina 20
Admission: 2-5 CUC
Open 10pm-2am
Tel. +53 (7) 838 3091-2
This is a beautiful location with the main action taking place in a lovely outdoor garden facing the sea while inside an upmarket restaurant takes the bottom floor of another exceptional Havana mansion. This is somewhere which you should only go to on certain nights when you know there will be a good crowd there since otherwise you rattle outside on your own. The beat night is generally Friday night when the Club is the host to the ‘Friday Night House Party’ but if it is late and quiet move on since this probably means that the party is somewhere else tonight.
Karachi Club
Calle K, entre 15 y 17
Along with many other places a full salsa program is gradually being replaced by more hip hop and reggaeton (Tuesday and Thursday nights). Another place to pop into if you are passing by and like the look of it.
Admission: 2 CUC
1 CUP matinée
Open 10pm-3am
Tel. +53 (7) 832 3485
La Red
Calle 19, esquina L
A small underground bar which has a variety of shows and live music. If you are close by and want to pop in, it's a good option, otherwise not too much to commend it.
Admission: 3 CUC
Open 10pm-3am
Tel. +53 (7) 832 5415
Macumba Habana
Complejo La Giraldilla, Calle 222, esquina 37, La Coronela, La Lisa
Macumba often provokes a strong reaction with many people refusing to go anywhere else while others would not be seen dead near the place. It is a long way out of town (35 minutes from Old Havana) and with acres of marble and a number of up market restaurants included in the overall complex does not portray the old Buena Vista Cuba that many tourists have come looking for.
It is however a great venue for a popular band especially younger emerging artists which attract a trendy Cuban audience as well as tourists looking for ‘the place’.
Admission: 10 CUC
1 CUP matinée
Open 5-11pm Tue-Sun
Tel. +53 (7) 273 0568-9
Río Club (Johnny’s Dream)
Calle A, entre 3ra y 5ta, Miramar
Open 10pm-3am
T: 209 3389
Don’t ever underestimate the appeal of this venue. It has been reinvented several times over the last few years. Undeniably Johnny’s has a slightly chequered reputation, there are not too many shrinking violets amongst its clientele. It is however consistently busy, has a good dance floor and features some excellent bands and has a lively atmosphere. It is geared towards tourists so expect to pay a US$ 5 cover and then US$ 4 for a cuba libre.
Admission: 5 CUC
Open 5-11pm Tue-Sun
Tel. +53 (7) 273 0568-9
Sala Atril
Avenida 1ra, esquina 10, Miramar
The Sala Atril is one of the newest and trendiest places to go out to attracting in the main a young affluent and attractive Cuban crowd. Recorded music includes a mixture of techno and reggaeton in a large indoor up'market venue which is not really geared to tourists. Do bear in mind that this crowd generally follows the party so when the party is someone else you may find yourself with the place to yourself. The entrance to the bar is just to the right of the main entrance to the Karl Marx theatre and re-opened only in 2005. Generally the acts will begin to play at 11:30pm. The no smoking rule inside means that there is a pleasant breathability to the air and that you generally find a large crowd squeezed together on the outside balcony.
Admission: 5 CUC
