Artist Salvador González has turned this alley into a shrine to both santería and the power of artistic vision. Brightly coloured murals, objects and kiosks celebrate Afro-Cuban religions with cheerful serendipity. It's worth a visit to see the preservation of local traditions at a community level. Top rumba bands play here every week (in particular Clave y Guaguancó), and locals turn out to sing and dance.

This venue was recently taken over by new management, and was also relocated to a two-storey building in the heart of Jesús María, a troubled neighbourhood in Old Havana. But the newly appointed director seems to be aware of what the institution can do for the community. Tango and rumba feature through the week, sometimes with amateur musicians, sometimes with major acts.

This magnificent mansion is the headquarters of the legendary theatre troupe Teatro Estudio. Almost every Sunday night its courtyard hosts well-selected concerts by trovadores, singer-songwriters and young talents in the making. The stage is just a small concrete deck, and there are only a few plastic seats, so arrive early to bag a good place near the front or you'll be sat on the floor for the performance. As shows are usually publicised by word of mouth, phone the venue for more information.

Calle Calzada (7ma) #512, esquina D
Admission: 5-10 CUC
Opus Bar open 3pm-3am
Sala Caturla 6pm Thur-Sun
Tel. +53 (7) 832 5551
Fire destroyed this theatre in 1976 and a lack of resources delayed its restoration until the second half of the 1990s. It now boasts excellent acoustics for classical music, but other genres can sound a little flat. The theatre is the home of the National Symphony, which plays in the main hall every Sunday, and occasionally hosts world-class guitarist and composer Leo Brouwer. The theatre has another smaller hall, the Sala Caturla, with good acoustics. There are various special concerts throughout the year-mainly classical music-but rock, trova and jazz ensembles also feature. The Opus Habana bar on the top floor is a popular spot for drinks before and after shows; if you prefer a Mojito with your music you can watch the concert on the TV monitors in the bar. The main hall is also used for several prestigious festivals, including the Festival Internacional de Jazz and Cubadisco.
