1.
Stroll down the Malecon. Havana's famous promendade is the place to be for everyone from practicing musicians, courting couples to trendy Havana youth as well as the obligatory fisherman. A cool sea breeze and magic view make this a must. Take the heat out of your day with a break in the comfortable, atmospheric and peaceful gardens of the Hotel Nationale. Following a mohito and a tuna sandwich you will be ready for Havana again.

2.
Chart a fishing boat from the Marina Hemingway marina in search of the elusive marlin. Wahoo season offers easier pickings, although less glamerous.

3.
Relax with a beer by one of Havana's rooftop swimming pools. Watch the world rush by below as you cool off in style. The Hotel Saratoga is one of the best with a beautiful view, crystal clear water and wireless internet thrown in to boot.

4
Spend the hottest part of the afternoon drinking daiquiris frappe and flirting in the Bacardi Bar.

5.
Play dominoes. Sitting outside your house with a bottom of rum and set of dominoes is a time honoured Havana tradition and will provide you with insights to Havana living.

6.
Smoke a big fat cigar in the exclusive smoking room at the very charming Hotel Del Villanueva; reserve a private humidor there for your more important purchases.

7.
Arrange to ride one of the beautiful Arab blooded horses through Lenin Park.

8.
Have scent hand-blended for you at the Perfumeria Habana 1791 on the corner of Mercaderes and Obrapia Streets. Follow this up with the purchase of scented tuberoses for a serious seduction scene.

9.
Go to a concert in the Tribuna Anti-Imperlialistia on the Malecon. Both Cuban and international groups perform here on a regular basis. The Malecon and Caribbean sea offer a fantastic backdrop to the show.

10.
Climb up the bell tower of San Francisco church. Not for the faint-hearted, but the view is magnificent.

11.
Walk around Vedado, the traditionally upper class neighbourhood of Havana, to admire the many avant garde style mansions in varying states of repair.

12.
Take a salsa class with one of the very many private teachers. This will not enable you to rotate your hips if you are English but will let you pretend you are a great salsa dancer when you get back home.

13
Go antique window-shopping. There are a number of dealers around Havana and, until recently, a Saturday morning antiques market at the Jardines Tropical. Notemuch is protected as patrimony and cannot be taken out of the country.

14.
Eat the best vegetarian Sunday lunch in Havana, in the beautiful Japanese Garden within the National Botanical Gardens. Take your own rum.

15
. Cross the harbor on Havana's answer to Hong Kong's Star Ferry (ok not quite but you get the picture): the Regla Ferry, to visit the fascinating fishing village on the eastern shore of Havana harbor. Make sure you see the black Madonna in Regla parish church.

16.
Check out the Saturday morning rumba at the Callejon de Hamel (the famous painted street) in Centro Habana.

17.
Escape from Cubania at the Havana golf course, for a relaxed 9 holes in a country setting. The course doesn't challenge Augusta but the beer is cool and the atmosphere friendly.

18.
Skim across the waves on a kite surfinging or windsurfing board from Playa Santa Maria.  Onshore breezes keep you from leaving town for good - at least, in theory.

19.
Check out Club Havana beach club for a game of tennis, swim and a spot of lunch; always lots of local gossip.

FOR KIDS
1. Ride the 1950's amusement park rides at the Parque Lenin complex. Follow this up with a visit to see the elephants & other animals on safari at the nearby park.

2. 'Vamos a la playa' ('let's go to the beach') resonates perfectly in Havana. A string of beautiful beaches 15 minutes east of the city (around Playa de Este) provide the perfect playground. But the Cubans will shriek if they see you going swimming when the temperature's less than 100 degrees.

3. Visit Havana's acquarium, the stars of the show are undeniable a group of dolphins who are definitely performers. A real treat is to swim with them.

4. Get Cuba's best ice-cream at the famous Coppelia complex in the centre of the city. Be prepared for huge queues at weekends.

5. Go to the circus. The big top is a new edition to Havana entertainment and features a variety of circus school graduates. Don't expect cirque du soleil but the lack of polish gives the place an authentic charm.
