According to Elio Rodríguez Valdés, one of the participating artists, “This exhibition has brought together a group of artists who have delved in topics such as race, identity and racism…which for decades were taboo in Cuba in the national public sphere…Keloids are thick scars resulting from excessive growth of fibrous tissue, and many persons in Cuba believe that black people are specially prone to these scars. Thus the title of this exhibit refers to the persistence of racial stereotypes. Paintings, photography, installations, sculptures and videos are used to propose new ways of thinking, ridicule and dismantle the so-called race differences.

XXI Festival de Raíces Africanas Wemilere
24-28 may/ 2010
Guanabacoa, La Habana

The African Roots Festival opened for the first time in 1989 in what once was called Asunción de Guanabacoa Village, a primitive aboriginal settlement founded as a town in 1554. The mixture of traditions, cultures and sense of belonging is expressed in Wemilere—meaning ‘a festivity dedicated to the orishas or deities’in the Yoruba language—whose main objective is to gather and transmit knowledge about the African universe in Cuban culture, and which every year invites an African country or one with a strong Black presence. During the Wemilere Festival, the variety and richness of African cultures take over the streets of the town of Guanabacoa, infecting villagers and guests alike with their catching and colourful rhythms. This year, Wemilere will be dedicated to the Yoruba culture. Lectures include “Yoruba culture in America and the Caribbean,” Slavery as a social and historic phenomenon,” The African influence,” and “Repercussions of the African impact on the ethics of the Cuban people.”

18-25 APRIL / 2010

Continuing a tradition that dates back to colonial times, in 1993 a group of young artists decided to organize these romerías with the arrival of Spring. This festival, which was held for the first time at the foot of the cross which Father Antonio Alegría placed on 3 May, 1790 at the top of a hill, 275 metres above sea level, is presided over by the Hacha Taína (the Taino Axe) and the Cruz de Madera (the Wooden Cross), symbols of the mixture of elements that constitute the Cuban culture. Following this spirit, every year musicians, actors, researchers, artists, writers and dancers come together to share their artistic endeavour during intense days and nights in which the diversity of their propositions is exhibited, and Cuban and foreign artists join the locals to enjoy a marathon- like programme in various parts of the city. This year, the Romerías will be dedicated to the Canadian city of Toronto, to the solidarity between nations and to the 50th anniversary of ICAP (Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples of the World), as well as to the centennial of the birth of José Lezama Lima. Participants to the event include 279 visitors from other nations. A special attraction will be the exhibition of 29 lithographs, which were rfecently donated to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes by the American collector Gilbert Brownstone
