Aselection of photographs, paintings, engravings, sculptures and video art of several of the most important Cuban artists today—and exceptional opportunity to come into contact with diverse aesthetics, themes and manifestations in one single exhibition. Undoubtedly the most interesting exhibit of the month with works by Alfredo Sosabravo, Manuel Mendive, Nelson Domínguez, Pedro Pablo Oliva, Eduardo Roca (Choco), Flora Fong, Roberto Fabelo, Arturo Montoto, Zaida del Río, Santiago Rodríguez Olazábal, Eduardo Ponjuán, Rigoberto Mena, Agustín Bejarano, Carlos Quintana, Belkis Ayón, Ernesto Rancaño, Léster Campa, Alexis Leyva (Kcho), Los Carpinteros and Aimée García.

Exhibition by second-year students of the Instituto Superior de Arte composed of 14--very experimental--pieces in different formats(photography, painting, video art and other) which deal with topics of social, political and self-referential themes.

Illustrations and posters by renowned German artists. The works are divided into two series: posters by the activist, publicist and designer Klaus Staeck, important poster artist of postwar Germany; and the portfolio Projekt Flagge Zeigen (Táking Sides) prepared after the German reunification in 1990.

This retrospective of the work of draughtsman, engraver, illustrator and art critic Jorge Rigol on the centenary of his birth pays tribute to an artist who assimilated the contributions of the first avant-garde in the island in line with a true Cuban character.

The collections Isla de Cuba pintoresca and Paseo pintoresco por la Isla de Cuba (Picturesque Islan d of Cuba and Picturesque Tour Around the Island of Cuba), beautiful graphic testimonies ofunquestionable romantic airs is a significant legacy of the painter and engraver Federico Mialhe, who was professor of Drawing and Painting, and director of the San Alejandro Art Academy in Havana.

Photographs by Chilean Juan Gonzalo Vidal, giving testimony to the ebullient foundational period of the Taller de Serigrafía René Portocarrero during the 1980s.

René Francisco Rodríguez, whose work is deeply self reflexive, metaphorical, questioning of the difficult and sometimes castrating nexus of man/art-society, uses different means--drawing, painting, sculpture, installations, performances—to examine the mechanisms of creation, marketing and socialization of art.

Exhibition curated by Píter Ortega, who is still betting on the work of the youngest generation of Cuban artists and their exciting production. The exhibit includes works by Yenisley Yanes, Osailys Ávila, taima Campos, jorge otero, Carlos Ernesto garcía, Ricardo miguel Hernández and lancelot alonso..

Exhibit “Fabulaciones” (oil on canvas) and posters (oil on cardboard) by this young artist Jorge Luis González (Yuque), who is determined to merge posters and paintings interchanging graphic and pictorial resources to achieve images that explore today’s problems with great communicational efficiency.

The young painter and photographer Lisandra Isabel García, student of the Instituto Superior de Arte and a prizewinner at several important national competitions shows manipulated photography in a play with resources used in painting and design to offer the viewer a poetic and surreal world.

The sensual and fascinating universe of the Argentinean tango has been captured by the artist Isidoro Zang, in this exhibit, which according to the photographer, critic and researcher Rufino del Valle, “is the testimony of a deeply-rooted popular manifestation in Argentina shown through poetic images.” The exhibit is accompanied by tango videos and recordings.

Original works from the Conde de Lagunillas Collection of the Fine Arts Museum of Cuba—thelargest collection in Latin America focusing on ancient times—and of the Dihigo Museum of theUniversity of Havana will join the magnificent copies made by Emile Gilliéron and his son based onarchaeological findings in Crete, made available in Cuba thanks to the collaboration of theWinckelmann Institute in Berlin.

Around Musicals in 70 Minutes is the suggestive name of Alfonso Menéndez’s latest work, a tour of famous works, many of them based on the animated film versions—The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Beauty and the Beast, Anastasia, The Lion King, Hercules, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. The beautiful and suggestive music, the excellent performances by young actors and the splendid costumes all enhance this production which will probably run until the end of the summer.

La gran tirana is based on the life of the legendary Cuban singer Guadalupe Yolí, whoafter a brief yet successful career in her own country, obtained fame and fortune in New York to later die in poverty and anonymity. According to the playwright and critic Amadodel Pino, with this play, “Carlos Padrón reveals himself as a writer who delves into theroots of nationality, into the deepest recesses of popular culture. His close examinationof this woman is credible, familiar, representable…it is more than an emblematic role ora time-worn pattern.

Lo que le pasó a la cantante de baladas. Directed by the outstanding Cuban playwright José Milián, the Pequeño Teatro de La Habana presents a new version of this play written by Milián, which opened in 2005 and was very favorably received by the public and thecritic. For the playwright, poet and critic Norge Espinosa, “If music is nothing more thana form of nostalgia, here is Olimpia, a diva of song who from her exile in Miami tries to organize her memories in harsh contrast with reality…This play is an urgent tribute to the women who, microphone in hand, gave Cuba a musical expression that is that of pure emotion and which goes beyond any distance…”

Bolero, a musical genre which emerged in Cuba in the second half of the 19th century iswhat this festival is all about. This genre has had a marked influence in other countries of the area, including places as far away as Spain and Japan. This year, the festival will be dedicated to Mexico and the great Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, known as the Buenavista Social Club Diva.” Singers form Mexico, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica,Colombia, Venezuela and Spain will delight bolero lovers.

Arock bands get-together in the city of Matanzas. The meeting hopes to promote rock and create a special place for rock lovers in the island. This year the festival will be dedicated to the mythical 1969 Woodstock festival. Areas will be fitted out for camping.
