The Esteban Salas Early Music Seasons in 2000 and 2002 became a festival in 2003 as part of the activities of the “Salas Year" to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of the Cuban musician whose musical scores were first preserved. Every year, the Festival gathers outstanding performers of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music who perform at the Historical Centre of Old Havana, together with their Cuban colleagues, headed by the Ars Longa Early Music Ensemble. The Festival‘s first venues were the Basílica Menor of the San Francisco de Asís Convent and the Iglesia de Paula, but it has now spread to other venues in Old Havana, such as the Oratorio San Felipe Neri, the Centro Hispano-Americano de Cultura or the Palacio de Gobierno. For the complete program and reservations for the concerts at the San Francisco de Asís Convent, visit www.ohch.cu, the City Historian’s Office official web site.

Tomás Terry Theatre, Cienfuegos

Sponsored by the Tomas Terry Theatre in Cienfuegos, this Monologue Festival was launched in 2003 with the aim of validating a genre, which by nature demands intense commitment of playwrights as well as actors. Despite being one of the newer events in the domestic cultural scene, this festival has already achieved a standing in the Cuban stage, and at present the most renowned Cuban playwrights, directors, actors and actresses compete in the beautiful Terry theatre. Awards during the 2007 Festival went to the play El otro Javier, by experienced playwright Gerardo Fulleda León; actress María Gema Castro, actor Osvaldo Doimeadiós, and director Carlos Díaz, from Teatro El Público. In the context of the festival and as a tribute to the 35th anniversary of the Nueva Trova movement, a new book on the topic has just been published: La canción de la Nueva Trova, by journalist Antonio López Sánchez, a collection of interviews to renowned figures of the Nueva Trova movement in Cuba, as well as other public figures who were central to the creation and development of this movement.

Festival Internacional de la Trova Pepe Sánchez
Festival Internacional de la Trova Pepe Sánchez
March 2008
Casa de la Trova and Sala de Conciertos Dolores
Santiago de Cuba
These festivals began in 1962 as homage to Santiago de Cuba-born composer José (Pepe) Sánchez (1856-1918), considered the father of the Cuban trova. Several generations of musicians from different musical trends within this genre have participated in this event, including exponents of the most traditional trova music, of filin (an evolution of bolero and trova), and of the so-called ‘nueva trova’. Santiago de Cuba—the cradle of the Cuban song—hosts this festivity which goes beyond the established settings and takes the city’s streets and parks by storm in a celebration where musicians and singers from abroad join their Cuban counterparts. The closing of the festival on March 19th, Troubadour Day, in commemoration of the anniversary of the birth of Pepe Sanchez, becomes a special moment when the city awakens to the tune of delightful serenades.

Festival Internacional de Documentales Santiago Álvarez In Memoriam

Festival Internacional de Documentales Santiago Álvarez In Memoriam
6 to 11 March
Movie theatres Cuba and Rialto
Santiago de Cuba

Created in 2000, this festival aims at highlighting the prominent role of the documentary, a film genre that has been somewhat consigned to oblivion by the promotional mechanisms of the larger movie festivals, yet with a tradition of significant quality and acknowledgement in Cuba, among other factors, thanks to the work of the late prize-winning Cuban film-maker, Santiago Alvarez. Although the festival began as a national event dedicated to the memory of the most relevant Cuban documentary maker of all time, throughout the years it has attracted the attention of a number of filmmakers from Latin America, Europe and the United States. With films in competition, parallel screenings and theoretical discussions, the Festival constitutes a space for exchanging opinions and experiences among filmmakers and lovers of this genre.
