Maybe someone was having a quiet joke. Perhaps it was a coincidence. But for one reason or another, Havana's Karl Marx theatre was the setting for the inaugural night of celebrations in honor of that great capitalist prop, the hand-rolled cigar.

The most important and massive Cuban cultural event, the 18th International Book Fair will be dedicated to Galicia as the country guest of honour, and to the National Literature Prize laureates essayist and lecturer Graziella Pogolotti, and the playwright, poet, narrator and essayist Antón Arrufat, who has been notoriously vindicated after being ostracized during the so-called “grey quinquennium", a particularly oppressive and mediocre period for Cuban culture. More than eight million copies of over one thousand new titles will be sold. Here are some titles that are worth looking for:
Diccionario enciclopédico de la música cubana [Encyclopedic Dictionary of Cuban Music], by editor and musicologist Radamés Giro (Editorial Letras Cubanas). This four-volume dictionary includes an extensive list of Cuban composers, musicians and singers from every period and style; the principal musicians who have performed in the Island; and the most significant Cuban genres and musical instruments.
Historia de la Iglesia Católica en Cuba [The History of the Catholic Church in Cuba], by researchers and lecturers Eduardo Torres-Cuevas y Edelberto Leiva Lajara (Ediciones Boloña, City Historian’s Office, limited edition). This documented and enjoyable essay is a must in order to understand the complex relationship between the Church and the State and the very particular religiousness of Cubans.
Tres mujeres en la vida de José Martí [Three women in the Life of José Martí], by Ramiro Valdés Galarraga (Editora Política). The author tackles a subject that has been invariable dealt with by the biographers of Cuba’s national hero, José Martí, in an especially puritanical manner: his platonic relationship with María García Granados; the strained relations with his wife, Carmen Zayas-Bazán; and who seems to have been the love of his life, Carmen Miyare.
El concierto y otras obras [The Concert and Other Plays] (Letras Cubanas), a collection of five plays by Ulises Rodríguez Febles, one of the most interesting playwrights of today’s Cuban theatre, as he delves, boldly and heartrendingly, into conflicting areas of Cuban contemporary life.

A favourite of young Cuban audiences, Aceituna sin Hueso combines the Island's rhythms with flamenco and country, and traces of Indian, Celtic, Arab or Andean folk music, yet the resulting fusion is harmonically and amazingly Cuban. Thought-provoking or humorous, the lyrics of their songs are perfectly and sensually performed by Miriela Moreno-the group's vocalist and director-establishing a magnetic communication with the public in an almost ritual-like atmosphere.
Fri 8, Sat 9, Sun 10
Bárbara Grave de Peralta began singing Cuban music of rural areas, and later took up genres like the bolero, guaracha and ballads, although at present pop music and the controversial reggaeton seem to be her aim. A good voice, a pleasant stage presence and unquestionable versatility, but much too attentive to the swings of the musical market.
Fri 15, Sat 16, Sun 17
A gala performance to mark the 43rd anniversary of the Original de Manzanillo and the 8th of Habana All Stars. A great opportunity to enjoy good Cuban dance music, including danzón, guaracha, son, cha-cha-cha, bolero and salsa. Not quite as famous as Buena Vista Social Club or Compay Segundo, but nevertheless good, spicy Cuban music.

Twelve years ago, the trovador Ariel Díaz, considered the most poetic of the younger generation of Cuban singer-songwriters, made his debut at the Casa de las Américas, and today he is back with many new compositions. Despite his rather discreet voice, the excellent lyrics, beautiful melodies and good guitar-playing are a musical oasis in the midst of high-speed Cuban rhythms.

It's not too often that the Cuban guitarist, bassist and singer-songwriter Yusa may be seen, heard and thoroughly enjoyed in Havana as her international career has taken her to London, Rio, Paris, Japan with rave reviews wherever she goes. Her music is fused with traces of Cuban, Brazilian, jazz and R & B styles, giving way to a very personal-often laid back, at times intense-funky style of her own. In the words of Jan Fairley, “Listening to.Cuban singer Yusa.one knows one is finally hearing 21st-century Cuba." An exceptional St. Valentine's Day gift.

In spite of a long tradition that began in the 19th century, nowadays musicals are not very frequent in Cuban theatres. This is why Horario de merienda [Coffee Break] is a welcome departure from the usual weighty stage productions. With music by Juan Formell, director of the world-famous band Los Van Van, the play is about three constructors who during their coffee break discuss the everyday lives led by ordinary people. Nothing to rave about, but refreshing nevertheless.

Directed by Lizt Afonso and Canadian Kelly Robinson, Vida is the story of a woman-symbol of the Cuban nation-who decides to give her granddaughter the legacy of her Spanish-African ancestry. Alfonso has combined new choreographies with fragments of two previous successful productions, Alas, Elementos and Fuerza y compás, with her customary fusion of flamenco and Cuban popular rhythms and songs. In addition to the excellent performances by the company and by guest dancer Oddebí García of the Conjunto Folklórico Nacional, Síntesis lead singer Ele Valdés in her role of Vida, and Yaraidy Fernández as Alma, the granddaughter, stand out in their own right. No wonder the production was elected by Globe and Mail daily one of the five best shows performed in Canada in 2007.

The Cuban National Ballet returns this weekend with one of the great classic ballets of all time, Swan Lake, choreographed by Alicia Alonso, based on Marius Petipa's and Lev Ivanov's original piece. Do not miss Viengsay Valdés' performance-her powerful technique, impressive turns, endless balances and strong personality combined with her exotic beauty on stage make her the ideal dancer for the dual role of the swan-princess in the second act and the evil Odile in the third.

When we hear the word “Carmen", most of us automatically think of Alberto Alonso's 1967 version of the ballet of the same name with Alicia Alonso-who immortalized the piece-in the title role. Now, once again, the brazen and beautiful gypsy cigarette girl is stabbed to death by the jealous Don José in Eduardo Veitía's version in which he makes use of flamenco techniques. Although Veitía was prepared to take the risk of comparison between his ballet and Alberto Alonso's or Antonio Gades' versions, and contributed his own view to an undeniably expressive and impressive show, his Carmen does not reach the heights of the former.

Gerlys Álvarez Chacón invites the viewer to explore the multiple meanings of the sea-a constant feature in his work-whether reinterpreting traditional marine scenes, or in the recurring subject of migration, or as the essence of a cubanía marked by the insular nature of the country. The Ambos Mundos Hotel provides a very appropriate setting: Ernest Hemingway, who had a passion for the Cuban seas, took up residence here for several years.

Yanelis García populates her paintings with light, gentle, colour-filled figures-with a naiveté that indicates her autodidactic education-in oneiric scenes more akin to children's fantasies than to the phantom and dying creatures that inhabit adults' nightmares. Although this exhibition is outside the mainstream of contemporary Cuban painting, technically or conceptually unpretentious, it can be a refreshing and entertaining stop as one explores the oldest part of the city.

Festival Internacional de la Trova Pepe Sánchez
March 2008
Casa de la Trova and Sala de Conciertos Dolores
Santiago de Cuba
|
|
|
|
These festivals began in 1962 as homage to Santiago de Cuba-born composer José (Pepe) Sánchez (1856-1918), considered the father of the Cuban trova. Several generations of musicians from different musical trends within this genre have participated in this event, including exponents of the most traditional trova music, of filin (an evolution of bolero and trova), and of the so-called 'nueva trova'. Santiago de Cuba-the cradle of the Cuban song-hosts this festivity which goes beyond the established settings and takes the city's streets and parks by storm in a celebration where musicians and singers from abroad join their Cuban counterparts. The closing of the festival on March 19th, Troubadour Day, in commemoration of the anniversary of the birth of Pepe Sanchez, becomes a special moment when the city awakens to the tune of delightful serenades.

Festival Internacional de Documentales Santiago Álvarez In Memoriam
6 to 11 March
Movie theatres Cuba and Rialto
Santiago de Cuba
|
|
|
|
Created in 2000, this festival aims at highlighting the prominent role of the documentary, a film genre that has been somewhat consigned to oblivion by the promotional mechanisms of the larger movie festivals, yet with a tradition of significant quality and acknowledgement in Cuba, among other factors, thanks to the work of the late prize-winning Cuban film-maker, Santiago Alvarez. Although the festival began as a national event dedicated to the memory of the most relevant Cuban documentary maker of all time, throughout the years it has attracted the attention of a number of filmmakers from Latin America, Europe and the United States. With films in competition, parallel screenings and theoretical discussions, the Festival constitutes a space for exchanging opinions and experiences among filmmakers and lovers of this genre.

Yearly: April

Organized for the first time in 1993, this International Meeting of Ballet Academies has made it possible for dancers, teachers and students to become familiar with the technical and stylistic peculiarities of the Cuban School of Ballet through workshops, courses, and methodological and master lessons. Similarly, dancers and pedagogues from other countries have conveyed their experiences in a fruitful exchange with their Cuban colleagues. In addition, since 1995, an international competition for students is held in different categories (13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 years old) and four prizes are awarded: revelation, best partners, best individual performance and the Grand Prix. Lured by the event, legendary dancer and choreographer Mijaíl Baryshnikov arrived in Havana in April, praising the Cuban School of Ballet, which he placed at the same level as the French and Russian schools, of long tradition and standing.

Founded in 1989 by dancer Alicia Alonso, its general director, the Traces of Spain Festival pays tribute to one of the components of Cuban nationality. Both in its most traditional and contemporary exponents, the rich Spanish culture alternates with manifestations, which while being definitely Cuban, display an undeniable Iberian influence. Soloists, theatre companies, dance ensembles, music groups, Cubans and Spanish, perform at the Gran Teatro de La Habana as well as in venues in the oldest part of the city: Plaza de Armas and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, enduring testimonies of the Hispanic presence in the city.

Festival Internacional de Danza en Paisajes Urbanos: “Habana Vieja, Ciudad en Movimiento"
Yearly: April
Old Havana

This unique dance festival—the International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes “Old Havana, City in Motion"—was first held in 1996 in two or three small museums located in Havana’s Historical Centre, eventually bringing into play most of the institutions of the Historian’s Office, as well as the principal squares and streets of the oldest parts of the city. Aiming to link choreography and dancing with the visual and expressive potentials of centenary walls, balconies, and staircases, as well as achieving an interaction with viewers and passers-by, the meeting, organized by the Compañía Retazos, directed by dancer and choreographer Isabel Bustos, is attended by hundreds of foreign and Cuban guests who are fascinated by the opportunity to translate into movement the feelings and emotions which the beauty of Havana’s architecture awakens in them.

Every April since 1994, Cuba celebrates the World Dance Day established by UNESCO on 29 April in celebration of the anniversary of the birth of Jean Georges Noverre, whose treaty Letters on Dancing (1959) is considered an essential choreographic manifesto for the universalization of French dancing. The commemoration is an ideal occasion to see the best companies of the country perform, whether ballet, or folkloric or modern dance. As part of Days of Dance, other collateral events are held: The International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes: “Old Havana, City in Motion"; the International Meeting of Ballet Academies; the screening of series of films and videos on dancing; academic meetings; and the presentation of the National Prize for Dancing.
