Dos impulsos de lo erótico
Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Edificio de Arte Cubano)
|
Through 8 May / 2011 |
|
An exhibition which aims to rescue the production of two Cuban artists whose work was silenced by the tense atmosphere of the 1970s in Cuba: Santiago Armada (Chago) and Umberto Peña, who used eroticism in works of a marked expressionist character in order to allude to other topics. Little recognized and undervalued even today, Peña’s 12 engravings and one pencil drawing, and Chago’s 20 ink drawings on exhibit, some of which are now part of the museum’s collection, allow the viewer toi appreciate the values of their creation.

Puentes intangibles

The artist Ángel Alonso defines the characteristics of this personal exhibition: “…the focal points in this exhibition are the contradictions in western culture, the self-centered position of present-day man vis-à-vis other cultures and nature, and his relation with technological development and its paradoxes. Puentes intangibles is therefore the connection between three very different ways of doing things: one, painting, which is very traditional; another which is more experimental and is in the middle of video art and cinema; and another one which is rarely seen in the world of art: holography.

The Museo Napoleónico is reopened
|
|
|
Havana’s Napoleonic Museum was reopened last March 29 with the presence of Princess Alix de Foresta, who is the widow of Louis Marie Bonaparte, Prince and descendant of King Jerome, the French Emperor’s youngest brother. Princess Alix donated part of a porcelain dinner service presented by Napoleon Bonaparte to his brother Jerome on his wedding day to the prestigious
Cuban institution. For three years the building and the treasures it holds underwent major restoration work carried out by specialists from the City Historian’s Office.
One of the most important collections of Napoleonic and French Revolutionary memorabilia outside France and the most important in the Americas, the museum is located in a house known as Dolce Dimora, or Sweet Home, a mansion in the style of a Florentine Renaissance villa, owned by Italian-Cuban politician Orestes Ferrara, and built in 1928 by renowned Cuba architects Govantes and Cabarrocas, who used abundant European glass, Italian marble and Cuban hardwoods. The museum, which opened in 1961, was created from the personal collections of former Cuban tycoon Julio Lobo, who for years had a number of agents search abroad for pieces connected to Napoleon and the period in which he lived. The collection includes paintings, engravings, a library with over 5,000 books, papers, furniture, glassware, porcelains, and weapons. One of the most important pieces is the emperor’s death mask, brought to Cuba by Francesco Antommarchi, Napoleon’s personal physician, who made it at the time of the autopsy and later gave it to famous sculptor Antonio Canovas to make any necessary corrections before casting several copies in bronze, keeping for himself the one that is now on display in the museum; also, the pistol he used at the Battle of Borodino; his two-cornered hat and the spyglasses he used at St. Helena.
The Museum may be visited at Calle San Miguel, No. 1159 esquina a Ronda, El Vedado, La Habana, Tel. 879 1412/1460

Teatro Ensayo Gestus from Ecuador has produced this play as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the first opening of Las Pericas by Nicolás Dorr, one of the most important Cuban playwrights today, who wrote this play when he was only 14 years old. Written as a farce, the play presents the eternal contradiction between the old and the new, between the oppressive atmosphere of a bourgeois household in which “pericas” rule—crazy old ladies whose chatter is both ridiculous and pathetic, and the ebullient vitality outside. On 2 April, 3 pm, the Casa del ALBA will host a discussion on the importance of this play with the participation of its author, directors and actors.

Encuentro Internacional de
Academias de Ballet
Gran Teatro de La Habana
|
16-30 April / 2011 |
|
Organized for the first time in 1993, this International Meeting of Ballet Academies has made it possible for dancers, teachers and students to become familiar with the technical and stylistic peculiarities of the Cuban School of Ballet through workshops, courses, and methodological and master lessons. Similarly, dancers and pedagogues from other countries have conveyed their experiences in a fruitful exchange with their Cuban colleagues. In addition, since 1995, an international competition for students is held in different categories (13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 years old) and four prizes are awarded: revelation, best partners, best individual performance and the Grand Prix. |

Festival La Huella de España
Gran Teatro de La Habana and other venues
|
17-24 April / 2011 |
|
Founded in 1989 by Cuba’s prima ballerina, Alicia Alonso, this festival (literally, “Spanish Imprint Festival”), while acknowledging both traditional and contemporary Spanish cultural influence on the island, is nonetheless very Cuban. Cuban and Spanish soloists, theatre companies, dance ensembles and music groups perform at the Gran Teatro de La Habana as well as in the Plaza de Armas and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza--, itself an enduring testimony of previous Hispanic presence in the city. |

Festival Internacional de Cine Pobre
Havana
|
5-10 de abril / 2011 |

After much debate due to disagreements among those involved in the celebration of the Cine Pobre Festival, it was finally announced by its organizers that the 9th International Low-Budget Film Festival Humberto Solás will be held in Havana from 5-10 April and not in the eastern town of Gibara as usual. The opening of the festival will take place at the Chaplin Theatre although showings will take place for the most part at the seaside town of Regla, with collateral screenings of prize-winning films from prior festivals and other significant films in Old Havana, Centro Habana, El Cerro and Guanabacoa, with the aim of preserving the community character of the event. |
