America Cantat International Festival

Until the 7th of this month, concerts, workshops and conferences at the most important concert halls of Old Havana on occasion of the America Cantat International Festival, organized by the Cuban Institute of Music and the Argentinean Association of Choral Music, aimed at promoting choral music in all its genres and styles. 	The Musical Habana Company presents Pogolotti-Miramar, written and directed by Alexis Vázquez, music by Rafael Guedes and performed by Mayohuacán. This witty musical comedy deals with the racial prejudices that get in the way of a love affair between a black college student who lives in the working-class neighbourhood of Pogolotti and a white medicine student who resides in posh Miramar.

	12th International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes	From 4-8 April, 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm.
	12th International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes, Old Havana: City in Motion, at the Historical Centre of Old Havana, from 4-8 April, organized every year since 1996 by Danza Teatro Rtazos Company, directed by Isabel Bustos, and the City Historian’s Office. With the participation of over thirty Cuban and foreign dance companies, the streets, plazas and buildings of the oldest part of the city will become the perfect setting for a dialogue between dance, architecture and art. The festival will open with a great passacaglia on the 4th of April, at 11 am, which will set out at the Plaza Vieja and will stop at all the event’s venues: Plaza de Armas, Plaza de San Francisco de Asís and the Plaza Vieja itself; the streets of Mercaderes, Oficios, Amargura and Obra Pía; parks Rumiñahui, Simón Bolívar and Las Carolinas; galleries Oswaldo Guayasamín, Benito Juárez, de la Obra Pía, Alejandro de Humboldt, de la Comedia, Víctor Hugo de la Orfebrería, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm.

	14th International Meeting on Ballet Academies	From 31 March-14 April
	14th International Meeting on Ballet Academies from 31 March-14 April, presided by Masters Fernando Alonso and Ramona de Saá, with the participation of two hundred ballet students from nine different countries and a comprehensive program of tributes, concerts, workshops, sharing teaching and artistic experiences and views, expert lectures―including the ones to be given by Russian ballet dancer Azari Plisetski, who for years was Alicia Alonso’s partner, and Italian-American choreographer Joseph Fontano―and the competition, which will take place from 5-14 April at the Gran Teatro de La Habana (Prado y San José, Centro Habana, Tel. 861 3077-79), the 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 12 April at 8:30 pm; awards and closing ceremony, 13 and 14 April, 5:00 pm. Dancer and choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov, a legend of ballet of the last century, star of the Kirov Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre, where he served as its director from 1980 to 1989, and the New York City Ballet has arrived in Havana to learn close up the particularities of the world-famous Cuban School of ballet.

	The Ballet Nacional de Cuba presents La Magia de la Danza [The Magic of Dance], directed by Alicia Alonso, which covers high points of the universal ballet repertoire and is performed by important figures of the Cuban company.

	12th International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes
	As part of the 12th International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes, the City in Motion Video Dance Festival will be held at the Casa de Asia (Mercaderes 111 entre Obispo y Obra Pía, La Habana Vieja, Tel. 863 9740), Casa Víctor Hugo (O'Reilly 311 entre Habana y Aguiar, La Habana Vieja) and the Plaza Vieja in Old Havana’s historic centre.

	Jean Racine’s Fedra, adapted by Norge Espinosa, is the new presentation of the company El Público, directed by Carlos Díaz, for the month of April. According to Espinosa’s notes on the program, “The play’s characters weave a complicated labyrinth of intrigues: a Versailles that Racine locates in the city of Trecene. But humans continue to behave in the same manner, and when they become enraptured with passion, geography and discourses are forgotten. Racine’s characters are and live in passion. Teatro El Público invites you to its new production, which is an anatomy of this rapture. "

	Directed by Nelson Dorr, Esther Suárez Durán’s De hortensias y violetas [Of Hydrangeas and Violets] is the story of two lesbians who are set on raising a child and must face the intolerance, lack of understanding and selfishness that still weigh on those who, without hypocrisy, assume a condition which is considered “different". The tone, which goes from comedy to tragedy, serves to validate diversity.

	By one of the most successful Cuban playwrights in recent years, Amado del Pino, Vital Teatro presents En falso [False], a one-person play directed by Alejandro Palomino and performed by actress Mariela Bejerano, who bares the soul of a Cuban woman of our time with her daily little dramas and conflicts.

	Teatro Tres premieres Estoy divinamente así [I Feel Just Great Like This], a one-person show by popular Cuban actress, Luisa María Jiménez, with the art direction of Raúl Lima.

	Teatro de las Estaciones, from Matanzas, directed by Rubén Darío Salazar, opens En un retablo viejo [In an Old Tableau], a tribute to Teatro Nacional de Guiñol and its founders, text by Norge Espinosa from an idea by Salazar, where a clown and three puppeteers recall the first productions of Cuba’s puppet theatre.

Visual Arts

	From 30 March, the Villa Manuela art gallery of the Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC) has been showing Conversación en el huerto [Conversation in the Orchard] by renowned painter Arturo Montoto, who directs the attention to the artist’s first conceptual propositions.

	Moisés Finalé Galería Servando, Calle 23 esquina a 10, El Vedado.	From 20th of April to 4th of June
	From 20th of April to 4th of June, painter Moisés Finalé will be exhibiting a sample of his work, which some critics have described as baroque, a mixture of imagination and abstraction, where he recreates myths of different origins.

	Young painter and sculptor Guillermo Ramírez Malberti will be presenting from the 16th of April and all of May his individual exhibit, La mecánica, which constitutes a synthesis of his formal and conceptual preoccupations, directed at expressing and questioning the tensions and pressures of today’s world.

	Espacio abstracto	Opens on the 27th.
	At Galería La Acacia, Espacio abstracto, a group exhibition of abstract artists Enrique ávila, Carlos Trillo and Manuel Comas, all month, while exhibit Paisaje en la Acacia IV by artists Kelvin López , Juan Alberto Díaz and Mario García Portela.

	Cuban artist Tania Bruguera and Italian artist Sislej Xhafa have gotten together in exhibit Alternativas. By way of performances, videos, and installations, they question, at times aggressively, clichés regarding women.

	The Salón Blanco of the San Francisco de Asís Convent has opened its doors to the 2007 ArtCuba showing, which will be exhibited at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva on occasion of Cuban Culture Day, with works by Moisés Finalé, Agustín Bejarano, Vicente Rodríguez Bonachea, Ernesto Rancaño, Michael Angelo García Cuervo, Luis Antonio Espinosa and Miguel ángel Báez.
