Until the 7th of this month, concerts, workshops and conferences at the most important concert halls of Old Havana on occasion of the America Cantat International Festival, organized by the Cuban Institute of Music and the Argentinean Association of Choral Music, aimed at promoting choral music in all its genres and styles. The Musical Habana Company presents Pogolotti-Miramar, written and directed by Alexis Vázquez, music by Rafael Guedes and performed by Mayohuacán. This witty musical comedy deals with the racial prejudices that get in the way of a love affair between a black college student who lives in the working-class neighbourhood of Pogolotti and a white medicine student who resides in posh Miramar.

12th International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes From 4-8 April, 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm.
 
12th International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes, Old Havana: City in Motion, at the Historical Centre of Old Havana, from 4-8 April, organized every year since 1996 by Danza Teatro Rtazos Company, directed by Isabel Bustos, and the City Historian’s Office. With the participation of over thirty Cuban and foreign dance companies, the streets, plazas and buildings of the oldest part of the city will become the perfect setting for a dialogue between dance, architecture and art. The festival will open with a great passacaglia on the 4th of April, at 11 am, which will set out at the Plaza Vieja and will stop at all the event’s venues: Plaza de Armas, Plaza de San Francisco de Asís and the Plaza Vieja itself; the streets of Mercaderes, Oficios, Amargura and Obra Pía; parks Rumiñahui, Simón Bolívar and Las Carolinas; galleries Oswaldo Guayasamín, Benito Juárez, de la Obra Pía, Alejandro de Humboldt, de la Comedia, Víctor Hugo de la Orfebrería, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm.

14th International Meeting on Ballet Academies from 31 March-14 April, presided by Masters Fernando Alonso and Ramona de Saá, with the participation of two hundred ballet students from nine different countries and a comprehensive program of tributes, concerts, workshops, sharing teaching and artistic experiences and views, expert lectures―including the ones to be given by Russian ballet dancer Azari Plisetski, who for years was Alicia Alonso’s partner, and Italian-American choreographer Joseph Fontano―and the competition, which will take place from 5-14 April at the Gran Teatro de La Habana (Prado y San José, Centro Habana, Tel. 861 3077-79), the 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 12 April at 8:30 pm; awards and closing ceremony, 13 and 14 April, 5:00 pm. Dancer and choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov, a legend of ballet of the last century, star of the Kirov Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre, where he served as its director from 1980 to 1989, and the New York City Ballet has arrived in Havana to learn close up the particularities of the world-famous Cuban School of ballet.

Jean Racine’s Fedra, adapted by Norge Espinosa, is the new presentation of the company El Público, directed by Carlos Díaz, for the month of April. According to Espinosa’s notes on the program, “The play’s characters weave a complicated labyrinth of intrigues: a Versailles that Racine locates in the city of Trecene. But humans continue to behave in the same manner, and when they become enraptured with passion, geography and discourses are forgotten. Racine’s characters are and live in passion. Teatro El Público invites you to its new production, which is an anatomy of this rapture. "
