A demonstration of the old links between Cuban music and jazz, which connoisseurs insist in dating back to the last decades of the 20th century, when newly freed slaves emigrated to New Orleans, Jazz Plaza, which began in 1979 in the small space of the Casa de la Cultura at the Plaza de la Revolución municipality, has grown in dimension and reach. Now this festival gathers dozens of important national and foreign jazz musicians in
theatres and boîtes. Figures like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Haden, Steve Coleman, Michel Legrand, Ivan Lins or Ronnie Scott, and the Cubans Chucho Valdés, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Bobby Carcassés or Ernán López-Nussa, attract an expert audience anxious to hear the last tendencies as well as improvisations on old standards, in an informal and bohemian environment proper of this genre.
